Confession: I’m Starting To Love Linux

Yes, it’s true.

I don’t think that my love for Linux will ever surpass my love for the Mac OS, however, I do love me some Linux. It started up innocently enough, years ago, when I first discovered Ubuntu. I think it was version 2 or something like that.

Anyway, over the years, I’ve usually had one system running some kind of flavor of Linux that I used for cross platform website testing and what have you, but I never really used it much more than that, until recently.

That’s when I started using Ubuntu Linux “full time” as a work station. Because of that, I discovered a ton of open source software that I feel competes favorable with, and in some cases beats out, some of the commercial software that is out there. I had no idea that there were so many different options for music players, DVD burners, network tools, text editors etc. etc.

This new version of Ubuntu Linux is a bit disconcerting at first. Prior versions tried to emulate the Windows “Start” button, but with this version, they stepped away from that and created a totally different interface. It’s confusing at first, but you’ll quickly get used to it.

The icing on the cake, is that I discovered Oracle’s Virtual Box program. It’s a free emulator that lets you run Windows, MacOS and a different version of Linux inside a container within the Linux box. It’s a free virtual machine. It’s freaking amazing. Commercial versions of similar programs run you from $90 on up.

Another nice thing about Ubuntu, is that it’s fast. The oldish computer that I have running Ubuntu, runs like a champ. When booted to Linux, it’s a lot faster than when it’s booted into Windoze 7. So yeah, I dig Linux.

Anyway, if you’re tired of Microsoft’s crap, and tired of Apple’s crap, give Linux a try and see if you might grow to like their crap instead.

I did.
